AACSB recognizes Grenoble Ecole de Management for its 2020 Back-to-School Challenge

In 2016, AACSB launched its annual "Innovations that Inspire" initiative to pay tribute to business schools around the world that serve as champions of change in the business education landscape. Grenoble Ecole de Management (GEM) gained AACSB's recognition in the "Driving innovation in higher education" category for its 2020 Back-to-School Challenge, especially its positive contribution to society. GEM is the only French member among the elite group of 24 schools around the world to achieve this accolade, including the Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne, IMD Business School and Maastricht University School of Business and Economics.

The VR-based 2020 Back-To-School Challenge is part of the Human Capital and Education Design program spearheaded by IRT Nanoelec*. The challenge included the following innovations:

  • An escape game for a clearer understanding of the challenge's overriding theme, i.e. "A new deal for envisioning and affecting tomorrow's world".
  • Nine days of VR-based workshops and courses to teach students how to use controversy, address the issue of self-image in their digital relationships and play a leading role in their digital communication, all of which using an avatar.
    The challenge allowed participants to discuss and share their views on six key issues that have been propelled to the top of the social and environmental agenda by the Covid crisis and which were chosen to reflect the priorities and actions in GEM's ecosystem. The issues were health, work, energy, food, education and cities. The entire process was organized as an immersive online experience like something out of a video game. Their efforts were subsequently presented during an exhibition featuring 144 virtual stands, where students were required to pitch their "new deal" proposition to a panel of professionals and visitors, including six major corporate partners.

Grenoble Ecole de Management ramps up its support for disabilities and inclusion

50 additional Hyflex classrooms

After recently changing its status to a benefit corporation, Grenoble Ecole de Management (GEM) is investing resources to achieve its ambition of improving inclusion for people with disabilities.The school has just finished fitting 32 classrooms with its hybrid Hyflex Room system and is planning to equip a further 50 classrooms by 2023 as part of an investment package worth €1.7 million. Hyflex rooms represent an effective solution for students who:

  • Have physical coordination and movement difficulties (motor and visual impairments)
  • Are overwhelmed by social interactions and other light and sound stimuli (neurocognitive disorders, such as Asperger syndrome, or psychological disorders, including social phobia)
  • Need to stay near their family home (off-campus) for medical reasons

350 inclusive masks

To coincide with students returning to GEM's classrooms on February 8, the Casino Group and Schneider Electric funded the purchase of 350 transparent inclusive masks for hearing-impaired students. The aim is to promote lip-reading and allow for easier talks and discussions, despite any existing impairments and the obligation to wear a mask. The masks are manufactured in France by APF and are the same as those used by the state education system and local authorities.

Management & Disability Certificate: 147 certified students and 138 in the pipeline

  • On March 23, 2021, Unirh-Thransition renewed its support for the Management & Disability Certificate scheme taught by Grenoble Ecole de Management (GEM). Within the space of eight years, 27 companies have signed up for the educational venture launched by both partners. Certification has already been awarded to 147 GEM students. The new certification wave in 2021 will double that number by adding another 138 students. The online-based Management & Disability Certificate initiative was created in 2013 to provide future company executives with a long-term and fair solution for incorporating a disabled employee into their team.
  • The Data Asperger certificate that GEM launched in 2019 for people with Asperger syndrome is changing. The program has since been renamed "Application Developer-Designer specializing as a Data Analyst" and will be available as a work-study program, as well as in four French cities from September 2021 following the arrival of new partner WebForce3.
  • A special admissions process for disabled students with the disability diversity post-baccalaureate entrance exam. After completing their final year at high school, students sit a special post-baccalaureate entrance exam. If they pass, they spend the first part of their course with one of the 25 academic partners (preparatory course providers, technical institutes and technical diploma departments, including two in France's overseas territories). Once they have been awarded their diploma, they can join the first year of the GEM Grande Ecole Program directly without having to re-sit the entrance exam. The idea is to provide students with a gateway into higher education after graduating from high school, while receiving ongoing support to successfully complete their studies. Once they have become part of GEM, students with disabilities receive the necessary assistance throughout their learning experience and their specific needs are consistently taken into account.

A fully virtual Geopolitics Festival with over 12,000 live connections!

The 13th edition of the Grenoble Ecole de Management Geopolitics Festival was held entirely online from March 22 to 26. This free and openly accessible event attracted over 12,000 participants, who followed the various interactive sessions during the five-day festival. This year, 70 speakers interacted with participants during 24 conferences, workshops, roundtables and exhibitions on the overriding theme of "Adapting?!" (to the present and the future).

The Geopolitics Festival addressed the main trends and key issues underlying the digital changes gaining pace within our societies. Topics included the European Union, health, mobility, the environment, homeworking, global warming, changes in higher education and the agricultural model for food safety.
