Published on
22 January 2018

This Winter 2017-2018 edition of the Grenoble Ecole de Management (GEM) Energy Market Barometer explores the opinion of French energy experts about the challenges of e-mobility for the electricity sector in France. The experts were also asked where the focus of French energy policy should be in the next five years.

Report #9 - Winter 2017-18

Project team

Joachim Schleich (coordinator), Olivier Cateura, Mark Olsthoorn, Fakher Omezzine, Swaroop Rao, Anne-Lorène Vernay

The GEM Energy Market Barometer Report (Baromètre du Marché de l'Energie) is a twice-yearly survey of energy market experts from industry, science, and public administration in France. These experts are asked to provide their assessment of short-, medium- and long-term developments of national and international energy markets. This report is based on a survey that was conducted in December 2017 and included 84 participants from France.

Key findings

  • Most experts believe that increase in e-mobility requires major investments in the distribution grid.
  • High purchasing price and short range of batteries are the most important barriers for e-mobility.
  • Low density of charging stations and lack of standardized charging infrastructure are also important barriers.
  • Two thirds of the experts think that diesel and petrol cars will be banned in certain cities in the next 20-25 years.
  • Top three priorities for French energy policy remain the same as in previous barometers: energy efficiency, climate change, and decentralization.
  • The share of experts that emphasizes energy efficiency has steadily risen from 61% in 2014, via 74% in 2016, to 80% today.
